Authority is one of dozens and dozens of factors search engines use to determine a web page’s placement online. And humans sort of look at authority the same way. If you have it, people and search engines both take you more seriously. Here are 5 ways to increase your business’s authority in the eyes of search engines and humans alike.
- Link building online is sort of like a professional referral system in real life. If your trusted physician recommends a dentist, it can be like a related and relevant link to a website… kind of. This can go poorly as well too. For a long time one of the tricks used was to create just massive links online to and from anywhere. Some still do it even though it does not work. Comment sections just about anywhere are a great example where someone just shoves in their link like it is relevant to the topic even when it obviously is not. In this case it would be like if you’re looking for a dentist (like the above example) but instead of another medically trained professional suggesting a dentist to you, the crazy person on the corner starts shouting at you to go to the liquor store if you want healthier teeth. See how weird that is? But that’s what some online still do. Humans and Google both ignore it. Actually today Google penalizes it in many cases. So build authority with links, just make sure they are relevant and trusted.
- Be honest. Online and offline. Mostly though wherever what you say will last forever (yes even if you delete it) so online especially.
- Start submitting articles to online press sites with links to your site. Follow their directions for what qualifies as a newsworthy piece. You may even need to hire a writer to do it for you. Stick to the sites that have these rules though, they are the only ones that are helpful in this area. The sites that let you publish whatever for a price don’t really help your business.
- Start creating a library of information insider pieces, and have these published on blogs and in other areas online with links to your site.
- Start your own blog and do the same thing.
- Never plagiarize. Even if human readers don’t catch on, search engines will
- Just be around for a long time. The longer you are around the more authority search engines, and humans, tend to give you.
